When you travel to Fiordland you are visiting one of the most dramatic and beautiful parts of New Zealand!
The extraordinary beauty of Fiordland was recognised by the United Nations in 1986 as one of the world's foremost natural landscapes through it's inclusion in Te Wahipounamu - South West New Zealand Natural Heritage Area. The Fiordland National Park was described as having 'superlative natural phenomena' and 'outstanding examples of...the earth's evolutionary history'. It is the largest national park in New Zealand and also one of the largest in the world.
Fiordland's west coast is deeply indented by 14 fiords spanning 215 kilometres of coastline; Milford Sound, Sutherland Sound, Bligh Sound, George Sound, Caswell Sound, Charles Sound, Nancy Sound, Thompson Sound, Doubtful Sound, Dagg Sound, Breaksea Sound, Dusky Sound, Chalky Inlet and at the southernmost point Preservation Inlet. These 'Sounds' are in fact fiords created by glacial action over the last two million years - gouging, deepening and rounding these breathtaking u-shaped waterways to create sheer sided mountains dropping away into the sea. Clearing weather reveals thousands of waterfalls streaming from sheer sided mountains and still days provide glass like mirrored reflections of mountain peaks soaring into the sky.
Focusing further south than the more visited Milford Sound, our cruises travel the untouched and unspoilt southern fiords; Doubtful Sound, Breaksea Sound, Dusky Sound, Chalky Inlet and Preservation Inlet. Our vessel Affinity is ideally suited to getting up close and personal to this area of stunning natural beauty, providing our guests with an intimate look at these beautiful fiords, with the comfort of your own cabin and hearty kiwi style meals with a small group of fellow passengers.
Experience scenery like no where else in this largely uninhabited world.
All walks are optional, you may wish to stay onboard and relax or there may be a shorter walk option that would suit you better.
